We had a good start from St Mary's, we traced our route from yesterday, up to Logan's pass and over the Mountains until we reached Lake McDonald. Mary Ann really wanted to see this as it was founded by McDOnalds from Scotland and she was a McDonald. The scenery was awesome again, but the lake itself was disappointing. We had seen pictures of the coloured stones in the lake on the internet and they wer amazing, but in real life, they had none of the wonderful colours that the internet showed. The lodge was inpressive, but the staff were quite rude, the food was expensive and quite bland, so we weren't impressed.
McDonald Lake Lodge
We did meet a lovely couple who we interacted with for awhile, Mary Ann read all of the information in the reading room and could only find stuff on a Snider and nothing on the McDonalds, so that was disappointing. We had lunch, I had the Pasties, they were two small weird round pasties, floating in a really bland gravy, and they were really bland, I also had the Huckleberry lemonade and that was really quite sour. The meal cost me about $25 USD. Mary Ann had a burger and salad. Burger was frozen and bland, the salad was delicious apparently. Would not recommend. The waiter was lovely, the rest of the staff, not so much.
We then continued on our way, we got over the mountain and had to drive around the bottom and back to St Mary to continue on our way to Canada. I feel bad that I cannot share the driving, but I am not on the insurance for the vehicle, so not able to do anythign about it.
No cars in the US or Canada have front licence plates, only back ones. I am not sure when the law changed as Mary Ann said they used to have both, but not anymore. weird. But there it is.
We crossed the Canadian border without incident, I still have not seen any large animals, even though thye have large signs warning of Bison activity in a few places. The little shits are avoiding me. Hiding in the forest until they see me go past or something.
The last part of the drive was into the sun, so Mary Ann was having a hard time as she really struggles to see clearly at night. Although as she has two sets of glasses, and doesn't wear her reading glasses for driving, I have to tell her the speed limits on the GPS, or the smaller signs on the road. If I wasn't here she would not take the correct exits etc, it is a constant battle, but it keeps me laughing. Although last night as we got closer to the hotel, she was approaching a stop light and I was saying, "you have to stop, it's red, it's red IT'S RED".... No, she just sailed on through. I was like WTF!! She said she couldn't see due to the sun, but me screaming It's red, appeared to have no result. So that is a worry. I will have to be more vigilant, or organise some kind of insurance. Apart from taking wrong turns and going through Road Closed signs, and running red lights Mary Ann is doing fine.
Today we are off to Banff.
